Introduction

The Brothers Karamazov: Fyodor Dostoyevsky depicts the conflict between two generations through a brutal murder of the father. Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov is a greedy and lecherous father. He takes all the inheritance left by his wife when she dies, and fights over the same woman, Grushenka, with his eldest son Dmitri. One night, Dmitri thinks Fyodor is seeing Grushenka at home. He rushes home and nearly kills his father. Dmitri flies for his life, but Pavel Fyodorovich Smerdyakov, Fyodor’s illegitimate son, who has been malingering, finally puts the father to death. Russia is shocked by this intricate murder, and it leads to a string of events. The Brothers Karamazov presents a complex society, tragic themes of family, morality and humanity. It reflects the superb artistry.
